The two towers in the river resembling castles are actually intakes for the water works. They were accessible by a dike until construction of the Chain of Rocks Canal in 1953 raised the river levels. Tower Number One is the closest to the Missouri side, and was constructed in 1894. Tower Number Two was constructed in 1915.
