On July 1, 1959, the new $50 million Chrysler Plant on Highway 66 began operation. Plymouths, Dodge Darts, and Chrysler's compact Valiant were the first cars produced here. At the time, St Louis was the second largest producer of automobiles in the nation. The plant was idled in October 2008. The adjacent truck plant opened in 1966, and closed in 2009.
