French miner Philipp Renault was the first European to see the cave in 1720. He called it Salt Petre Cave. For the next 144 years, the cave would be mined for salt peter, an important ingredient in gunpowder. The rebels destroyed a Union gunpowder manufacturing operation in the cave.
