Old Courthouse
St Louis

Construction on what is now the Old Courthouse began in 1839, and was finished in 1862. In 1847, the first three trials in the Dred Scott case took place here. Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom after his owner took him to a free state. The US Supreme Court eventually ruled that slaves were not citizens, and therefore could not sue.
