Kirkwood was established in 1853, the first planned community west of the Mississippi, and a haven from the pollution and cholera plaguing St Louis. The "Queen of the Suburbs" is named for the Pacific Railroad's chief engineer and surveyor. The Train Station constructed in 1893 still serves Amtrak passengers. Route 66 narrowed two lanes through downtown Kirkwood, which presented a major traffic problem until I-244 (now I-270) was constructed in the early 1960's.
